CONTEST:The 5k is now live. I have created a contest page and tapped a group of great people to judge; there is even a faq. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the entries are like. Bring 'em on.

DELUGE ON FRIDAY
00-3-3
So, I leave my job, primarily so I can take a month or two to reflect on what I want to be doing in the 21st century. I'm thinking: no obligations, no time commitments, no pressure. And then the contest gets Slashdotted and Wireded on the same day. Now, I have close to 500 emails to respond to, and they're coming in at about 50 per hour. If you don't hear from me for a while, that's why. And now, for my next stunt . . .

EPIPHANY ON SUNDAY
00-2-28
For the last little while, Sundays have turned out to be the most interesting days of the week. I'm not sure if it is the Simpsons and the associated rituals which cause the abnormal bouts of unusual lucidity, contemplative meandering and intense concentration. More likely it is the simple fact that Sunday preceeds Monday.
I'm probably legally obliged not to share the wanderings of my thoughts this Sunday. But here is something equally interesting: Witold Rybczynski wrote a great book about the evolution of the modern western weekend called Waiting for the Weekend. Though it's been about 8 years since I read it, I still remember the revelation that leisure (at least the particular variety experienced by me) is a social construction shaped by religion, labor movements, cultural practices, technological innovations and other stuff which mixes up in an interesting way. Recommendation: read it.
