  I ALWAYS SAY:
Any internet strategy which does not accommodate the fact that more than 95% of the audience will spend more than 95% of their time on other sites is a poor strategy.
Even Yahoo, which offers pretty much everything (from travel booking, stock quotes, news feeds and chat to discussion groups, free email, games, searching and directories) doesn't get more than about 1% of my internet time, and I have a webmail account there.

Of couse, I also always say:

Good links are one of the principle ways in which one can provide value on a website.
But then there aren't any links on this page, except for the one which leads back to the main page of my own site. Sick.
